Ulyana Sergeenko debuted her Spring 2013 Couture collection today in Paris. I wish so badly I could be there in person, even just to be in Paris and not go to any fashion event! Her inspiration came from her childhood books and the imagery that can come from them. Harper's Bazaar interviewed her about her inspiration.
Her reply:
"The typical Soviet childhood was one spent reading books because we didn't have
many entertainment options back then. Books were treated with so much care and
respect — it was quite hard to get them. For every child, books were an opportunity
to get away from the reality to the world of fantasies, adventures and fairy tales.
The collection is inspired by well-known novels, among them the American classics
such as Gone with the Wind, The Wizard of Oz, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, The
Headless Horseman etc. The muse of the collection is Scarlett O'Hara, especially when
played by Vivien Leigh in the famous Hollywood adaptation."

We all knew capes were cool before, but now they are just fantastic!
Very Scarlett O'Hara with Ulyana's love for the deep v-cut and voluminous, elegant skirt.
Those. glasses.

I don't know why this one is one of my favorites. I think it's the subtle slate blue and the awesome details on the waist belt and hip accents. Look at the little animals! They are a theme throughout her designs. They are on buttons, clips, and other adorable pieces.
The woman herself! So what did you think? I love her inspiration and I feel she transported me into those story books. I think the creams and blacks were fantastic and then the saturated pops of color were very welcome. I love that she tells stories with her designs. I just don't feel like a lot of designers do that. I hope she keeps telling more stories! And now when I read any of these books again I will be picturing what the characters would wear if Ulyana made their outfits for them! It's her amazing attention to detail that I love her designs that much more. They all have such character.
These were just my favorites so go ahead and check out the rest of her collection here. I hope it wasn't a picture overload!

I love that pinafore/jumper dress. I can see the storybook inspiration, definitely. And that green! Who the hell needs emerald?!
